The first step in any relationship is the most important. Be willing to take a risk. Starting any new venture (even cooking a new recipe!) involves risk at some level. To what extent are you prepared to take the big risk that relationship involves?

Look at the ways in which each of you performs. Know that each acts from an historical base of values, traditions, and personal perspective. Be yourself, without trampling (or being trampled by) the other.

Be willing to give fully of yourself, without giving up your personal essence. Examine the nature of the relationship carefully, and act collaboratively. Are you on the same track? Or are you on a collision course? Align your vision with the other(s) you are in relationship with. Allow your enthusiastic devotion to your cause, your ideal, your goal to show itself in your tireless diligence towards its success, without denying others their dreams. Your passion will inspire those around you. Know that collaboration is the answer to all conflicts, big or small, and push for a win/win for all.
